Project Overview

During one of my first engineering projects at Cooper Union, I collaborated with a team of four other engineers to develop a tangible solution to a pressing urban challenge. We aimed to reduce residential reliance on fossil fuels by designing an efficient, automated sun-tracking solar panel proof-of-concept tailored to New York City's unique architecture.

Background Research & Motivation

Our project was driven by the stark reality of New York City's carbon footprint. In 2022, residential buildings in the city emitted over 15 million tons of carbon dioxide, with natural gas usage accounting for nearly 10 million tons of those emissions. This excessive demand is heavily tied to outdated heating and cooling systems. Through our research, we identified that offsetting "peak load" consumption—the maximum energy usage times when the city relies on natural-gas-fueled peaker plants—would significantly decrease both individual electricity bills and the city's overall carbon emissions.

Mechanical Design & Urban Integration

To capitalize on the massive amount of unused vertical space on New York City apartment buildings, we designed a consumer-accessible solar solution mountable on windowsills or balconies. Because static vertical panels suffer from poor energy capture, we engineered an active sun-tracking mechanism. Two photoresistors on the panel's edges continuously monitor light intensity, feeding data to linear actuators that automatically tilt the panel to track the sun from east to west, maximizing daily energy absorption.

Project Impact & The Engineering Process

As one of my first major projects at Cooper Union, this experience was foundational in teaching me the complete, top-down engineering design process. Beyond the technical construction of the tracking mechanism, I learned how to identify a real-world problem, conduct thorough background research, and iteratively develop a physical prototype. This project proved that effective engineering is not just about building hardware; it is about following a rigorous, research-driven methodology to create solutions that have a positive impact on society.
